Messages written to Maestro Portnoy

“To this day, I continue to use the things I learned from you and the rest of the faculty, and I’m so grateful for the time I spent in Aiken. I hope I am fortunate enough for my summer schedule to allow me to join you for another session!

Best wishes for many more successful years of the Conductors' Institute helping hundreds of students flourish!

Sincerely, Rosetta Isnardi”

“Eye-opening for me the first time I took my game outside of the cozy confines of the Institute at Bay Area. Following that, I did a Master’s at Stony Brook, a Fulbright in Vienna, a DMA at Juilliard, went to Tanglewood and the LA Philharmonic Institute, and have worked continuously in the field. I’m currently the Music Director of the Pensacola Symphony, the Meridian Symphony in MS, and the Mississippi Gulf Coast Symphony.

“The summers I spent with you at the Institute have had a lifelong effect on me. Studying with you and your gifted and supportive staff has shaped and enhanced my concept of the conductor’s art, and I will always be grateful to you, Maestro, for this invaluable gift.

“Thank you for establishing the Institute. Where would we conductors be without it?!

“Dear Maestro,

I want to tell you how much being in your class meant to me in terms of learning the skills of conducting—technical, artistic, and personal. I am grateful as well that all the young conductors to whom I have recommended your classes have found your training to be superb.

Warmest thanks,

JoAnn Falletta, Music Director, Buffalo Philharmonic”

“Dear Dr. Portnoy,

This is Sigi Yuan. I attended your conducting workshop back in 2020. It was the first conducting workshop I had attended, and I learned so much from it. My conducting improved significantly in such a short amount of time. I also made many valuable friends whom I still keep in touch with. It is not an exaggeration to say that your workshop changed the trajectory of my entire career, confirming my love for conducting. Back then, I was still doing my Master’s degree in Music Education. Now, I am a Wind Conducting DMA student at Peabody Conservatory, and I am incredibly grateful to you. I am sure you have inspired countless people, just like how you inspired me.

Thank you so much for everything,

Sigi Yuan”

“Dear Don,
Just a note to thank you for inviting me to participate in the Institute. I think last week was one of the best-managed and most successful events of this type that I have ever been involved with. I admire your ability to structure the Institute weeks so that each participating conductor comes away with new knowledge, useful experience, and a renewed enthusiasm for music as well as the art of conducting. And I especially admire the way you accomplish this without the least hint of competitiveness. In later years, these conductors will have much to thank you for!
Larry Newland, Former Assistant Conductor, NY Philharmonic”

“Dear Don,
As usual, this summer was wonderful to have the privilege of being a part of the Institute and collaborating with you. Of all the various summer conductor workshops, this one is special because of its combination of rigorous professionalism and a fully supportive approach to the participants. Directing the Institute was very much in evidence, and your superiority as a musician and teacher, as well as your sharp analytical eye, make it especially beneficial for the conductors. It was a pleasure to observe their growth.
Samuel Jones, Former Composer in Residence, Seattle Symphony”

“Due to the hectic pace that characterized the final days of the past Conductor's Institute, I found myself unable to formally convey my gratitude, respect, and appreciation for your patience. May I point out how privileged I felt in having been accepted to the seminar. This whole experience has proven to be a remarkable one that has had a major bearing on my professional development.

Rafael Irizarry, Associate Conductor, Puerto Rico Symphony Orchestra”

“Dear Dr. Portnoy,
Just a short note of thanks for a wonderful Conductors Institute this summer. We were all sad to see it come to an end. Every day, you had something useful and constructive to say. Your choice of teachers, composers, and repertoire was fantastic and impressive. The entire program was run superbly and professionally.
Vincent Lionti, Violist, Metropolitan Opera Orchestra”
